A Bedtime Story

Ever struggled to get your child to settle and fall asleep at bedtime? Yup. Me too. As has every other parent, ever, I’m sure. The good thing is that I got a poem idea out of it. And here it is.

That night I believe I actually said something along the lines of: “Oh, for cryin’ out loud. Will you please just go to sleep already.”

Sheesh. Kids, eh?

I wanna sleep in your bed

Time to go to bed, sweet pea.

But I wanna sleep in your bed.
 My room is too dark.
If I need a wee how will I see?

The hall light is on, sweet pea.

But I wanna sleep in your bed.
 Mine is way too hard.
Yours is so cozy, as soft as can be.

Here's a warm blanket, sweet pea.

But I wanna sleep in your bed.
 Mine is now too soft.
Your bed is perfect. Don't you agree?

Your bed is just fine, sweet pea.

But I wanna sleep in your bed.
 There's something in here.
It's in my closet and it's scaring me.

There is nothing here, sweet pea.

But I wanna sleep in your bed.
 My room is quiet.
I can hear every sound and I'm lonely.

We are right downstairs, sweet pea.

But I wanna sleep in your bed.
 I can't get to sleep.
I want to share my day. I was busy.

Tell me tomorrow, sweet pea.

But … I … wanna …
 zzzzzz …
